The headcount for this initial game stood at 14,000 in attendance and it would not take long for the fledgling WNBA to see its attendance figures skyrocket.
Professional female basketball fans quickly took to the idea of women playing professional basketball and wanted to show their support and in a big way. No one was going to let this league fail even if they were not diehard female professional basketball fans.
Close But No Cigar
In April 1998, the WNBA announced they would be adding two wonderful expansion teams, to be managed by the Minnesota Timberwolves and Orlando Magic, for the 1999 season. The Minnesota Lynx started their inaugural season in 1999 with 12,000 rowdy and raucous fans in attendance to watch the first regular-season game, against Detroit at Target Center.
This started the WNBA Minnesota Lynx legacy which has seen a few close calls for the WNBA Championship Title but no cigar for the ladies from the state of Minnesota.

he league could use your continued support and as a male who has played in the Division I ranks of the NCAA it is so very nice to see the woman’s game of basketball get its due, finally.
