The New York Liberty is known for being one of the most successful teams on the court, but few know them for being successful off the court as well.
The Liberty strives to give back to the community and make impressions on the lives of those who least expect it. The team has become involved with several programs that seek to make a difference in the lives of those who need it most: our youth.
Garden Of Dreams
The Garden of Dreams is a non-profit charity that works very closely with teams and performers who have appearances at the Madison Square Garden. Some of the teams involved with the Garden of Dreams are the New York Knicks, Rangers, Liberty, Madison Square Garden Media, MSG Entertainment and Fuse.
The goal of Garden of Dreams is to give memorable and unique experiences to thousands of deserving children and their families. Giving special access to Madison Square Garden events and celebrities often does this.
The Garden of Dreams attempts to emulate the heroism, inspiration, and strength of the children who become involved with the charity. Children facing obstacles, whether it has to do with illness, homelessness, poverty, or foster issues, are the targets for who the charity seeks to help.
Over 165,000 children have been helped, over 145,000 tickets have been donated, and over 1,800 special events have been created for children and their families.
The Garden of Dreams has also partnered with specific departments from the MSG team to create other outreach programs. One such program is Fuse Rocks the Classroom. Fuse and the Garden of Dreams team up to give high school students their first glimpse into music television. Students receive hands on experience working with camera equipment, set design, and production crews.
Another partnership between Garden of Dreams and MSG Media is called the MSG Classroom. This eight-week course teaches high school students about different careers in the television industry. During the course, students will create their very own sports and entertainment program that they present to MSG executives and employees during a wrap party.
Read To Achieve
Read to Achieve is the most extensive educational outreach program in professional sports history. All 29 NBA teams, 16 WNBA teams, and 8 NBDL teams support this initiative that helps to promote the value of reading and adults reading to children. This program gets over 200,000 donated books through reading events and book fairs.
Read to Achieve also helps against illiteracy through creating essay contests, online programs, and Reading and Learning centers throughout the United States.
May is the annual WNBA Read to Achieve Tip-off event that promotes summer reading. Throughout the season there will also be NBA/WNBA All-Star Reading Teams, store events, appearances at the Reading and Learning Centers, and local reading time-outs. A love of reading enriches the lives of everyone involved and is a great bonding activity for parents.
The Liberty is very passionate about this program and continues to give back to the community through their volunteering efforts.
