The Indiana Fever has been a consistently strong team. Behind Top Post Tamika Catchings, is top guard Katie Douglas.
Douglas is one of the team’s veterans and her experience has helped lead her team to numerous playoff games. She plays hard, smart, and tough and that attitude will continue to make her one of the top guards on any team she is on.
Before The WNBA
Before Katie Douglas made it to the WNBA she was a standout player at Purdue University. With the Boilermakers, she was able to make a name for herself and show off her amazing talent. In 1999, Douglas helped lead Purdue to the NCAA Division I Women’s Basketball Championship.
She was also named to the NCAA Women’s Final Four All-Tournament Team in 1999 and 2001. Douglas was named a Kodak All-American in 2000 and 2001. In addition to these awards, she was also named the Big Ten Conference Player of the year, the Silver Basketball from the Chicago Tribune, and the Big Ten Conference Suzy Favor Award.
The Suzy Favor Award is given to the conference’s female Athlete of the Year spanning all sports. Douglas is not only a phenomenal player, but an intelligent person as she graduated from Purdue with a Communications Degree.
Last Season
Last season was another strong season for Douglas. Of the 34 games the Fever played, Douglas started in all and averaged 29.8 minutes of play per game. In her almost 30 minutes of play, she was able to average 13.7 points per game.
To go along with her 13.7 points, she also had 3.4 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists per game, and 1.4 steals per game. Douglas was also strong from the field and free throw line with 44.9% and 83.1% respectively. She has been in the WNBA for 10 years and in those 10 years she has consistently been among the top ranked. Her average points per game was enough for a No. 19 ranking in the WNBA and her assists per game was also good enough for No. 17 in the WNBA.
Playoffs
In the 10 years that Douglas has been in the WNBA, she has made it to the playoffs in all but 2 seasons. She has gained valuable playing time and experience in these games that she continues to use and learn from.
Her best showing in the playoffs was in 2007. She was with the Connecticut Sun at the time, however, she was still a deadly threat after averaging 17.3 points in 3 games. She played almost the whole game in all three playoff games and also had 5.3 rebounds per game, 3.3 assists per game, and 3.3 steals per game.
Her next best play was in 2009, which was her second season with the Fever. In 10 games, she averaged 15.5 points per game, 3.5 rebounds per game, 4 assists per game, and 1.4 steals per game. Douglas will continue to lead the team as only veterans know how.
