The Atlanta Dream have had a remarkable season last year and the Dream’s top guard Iziane Castro Marques played a big part in that.
Marques plays with the Dream after having previous experience with other WNBA teams. The Brazil native has proven herself to be a huge asset and formidable opponent.
About Iziane Castro Marques
Iziane Castro Marques comes to the Atlanta Dream after playing with several winning WNBA teams, but hails from Brazil. She was originally signed with Miami Sol, followed by Phoenix Mercury, Seattle Storm, and currently the Dream.
Before she even made it to the states, Castro Marques was leading the Paulista League in scoring. She played in this league in her native Brazil, and it was her play here that caught the attention of scouts and coaches alike.
Her hard work and tough play earned her a spot in the Miami Sol training camp. In 2002, the Miami Sol decided she would be a good fit in their program and signed her, making her the second youngest player in the WNBA at the tender age of 20.
Castro Marques has continually improved her play throughout the years and is finally figuring out her role in the WNBA. She played in 19 games with the Sol and averaged 3.5 points per game, with a career-high game of 11 points. The Sol ended up going under but the Phoenix Mercury scooped her up. She averaged 4.3 points per game in 2003.
During the summer of 2004, Castor Marques represented Brazil in the 2004 Olympics in Athens. Brazil finished fourth with Castro Marques’ help and scored 15 points per game. In 2005 Castro Marques went to the Seattle Storm where she stayed for three seasons and established herself as a precocious and smart basketball player.
The Past Season
During the past 2009-2010 season the Dream went 19-15 in regular season play. Of the 34 games played, Castro Marques played in all games, started all games, and averaged 28.9 minutes per game. She averaged 16.9 points per game, 1.7 rebounds per game, and 2.6 assists per game.
In addition to this, Castro Marques also contributed 44.4% from the field and 65.9% from the free throw line. Castro Marques is ranked 7 in the WNBA in points per game with her 16.9 points. She is also ranked 6th and 4th for field goals made with 220 and field goal attempts with 496, respectively.
Playoffs
Marques was very consistent between regular season play and the playoffs. She started all 7 playoff games and averaged about 32.1 minutes of play. In those 32 minutes, Marques was able to average 16.9 points per game.
During the conference finals she struggled and only averaged 8.5 points in two games. The rest of the playoffs saw the Marques as we know and love averaging 2.4 rebounds per game and 2 assists per game to go along with being 47.1% from the field and 47.8% from the free throw line. In the last three games of the WNBA Finals she averaged 20 points per game.
