Algeria National Basketball Team is a member of the FIBA, or the International Basketball Federation, and has been a member of the said Federation for many years since they joined the International Basketball Federation in the year 1963.
The Algerian National Basketball Team rank 34th in the FIBA, and their FIBA zone is FIBA Africa. Unlike some other countries that are members of the FIBA, the Algerian National Basketball Team participates in tournaments, whether it’s local of international, and their achievements will be discussed in just a little while. The National Team in the FIBA World Championship
The Algerian Men’s National Basketball Team is not so fond in participating in international tournaments; one proof is that they only joined one international tournament ever since they have been a member of the FIBA.
This particular tournament is the FIBA World Championships, and the Algerian Men’s National Basketball Team played in the said tournament in the year 2002 which was held in Indianapolis, Indiana, USA. The Algerian Men’s National Basketball Team belonged to Group C together with three other different national teams: China, USA, and Germany.
After the preliminary round, the three best teams in each group would proceed to the second preliminary round and the last group would proceed to the 13th-16th playoffs, and the National Basketball Team of Algeria became one of those countries that moved on to the 13th-16th playoffs.
In the 13th-16th playoffs, the first game of the Algerian Men’s National Basketball Team was against the National Basketball Team of Venezuela. Unfortunately, the team lost against them with a final score of 83-98. Since they lost against Venezuela National Basketball Team, it means that they can be either 15th place or 16th place.
Their last game was against the Lebanon National Basketball Team, and fortunately they won, with a final score of 70-100, making the Algerian National Basketball Team the 15th place overall in the 2002 FIBA World Championship.
The National Team in the FIBA Africa Championship
The Algerian National Basketball team participated in the FIBA Africa Championship 14 times. Their very first participation in the said leagues was in 1965. They were only five teams that participated then: Morocco, Tunisia, Algeria, Senegal, and Libya.
The national team played four times, with two wins and also two losses, which made them the third place, with the bronze medal, in the competition. Their next participation was in the 1968 FIBA Africa Championship which was hosted by Morocco, and this time there were nine teams already. The Algerian National Basketball team belonged to the group B and they ended up in the 7th place.
They ranked 4th, 5th, 6th, 9th, 6th, 9th, 5th, 4th, 6th, 7th and 4th in the years 1980, 1981, 1983, 1987, 1989, 1992, 1993, 1995, 1999, 2003 and 2005 respectively. The highest achievement of the Algerian National Basketball Team was during the 2001 FIBA Africa Championship, where the team won the second place, with a silver medal. The team played the final game against the Angola National Basketball Team, with a final score of 68-78.
