The Concordia University Wisconsin Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 2nd in the NCAA Division III Midwest Region standings posted on February 28th.
The Falcons ended their season with an overall record of 23-5. Concordia faced Luther in the first round of the NCAA Tournament and lost 68-61.
The Falcons’ Season
The Falcons faced Luther in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, hoping to get a win and continue advancing. Luther stopped that dream dead in its tracks with a win 68-61. Luther’s superior rebounding and inside offense made the difference as they overcame a two-point deficit in the closing moments to end the Falcons season.
Concordia overcame a 7-point deficit in the second half to grab the lead 57-56. With 1:27 left the score was tied 57-57 and five failed three point attempts in the closing minute from Concordia allowed Luther to win off free throws. Concordia was outrebounded 47-29 and gave Luther 20 second chance points. Head Coach Shawn Cassidy leads the Falcons but relies on Edward Newton-Kemp, Luke Doedens, and Mitchell Schneider.
About The Team
Head Coach Shawn Cassidy is in his fourth season with the Falcons and has guided them to a perfect 16-0 NAC record, first 20-win season since 1989, and first NCAA tournament appearance since 2000. Cassidy is no stranger to this program as he is a former Falcon player and assistant coach.
In his first full season with the Falcons they finished 14-11 and have continued to improve ever since. Cassidy has led the Falcons to two CIT wins and a NAC North Championship with a 10-6 record.
Senior Edward Newton-Kemp was named to the All-Northern Athletics Conference First Team and NABC Midwest All-Region Team. Newton-Kemp averaged 16.5 points per game and 461 points in one season.
In the game against rival Edgewood College, Newton-Kemp went off with 27 points, 17 of which were in the second period. Juniors Luke Doedens and Mitchell Schneider were named to the All-NAC Second Team. Doedens averaged 14.7 points per game. In the same game against Edgewood he chipped in 13 points and 7 rebounds. In the loss to Luther, Doedens added 18 points. Schneider averaged 14.3 points per game. In the same game against Luther he chipped in 13 points in an attempt to win.

Concordia University Wisconsin is located in Mequon, WI along 200 acres of beautiful Lake Michigan shoreline. The University and its 13 Concordia Centers and classroom locations are home to more than 7,200 undergraduate and graduate, traditional and non-traditional students.
