The Georgetown University Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 22nd in the NCAA Division 1 standings posted on March 7th.
The Hoyas will enter the 2nd round of the Southwest Region of the NCAA Tournament with an overall record of 21-10 and a Big East Conference record of 10-8. They will face Virginia Commonwealth in their fight to advance in the tournament.
The Hoyas’ Season
The Hoyas’ have lost several big tournament games but were still selected as the No. 6 seed in the Southwest Regional of the NCAA Tournament. Georgetown fell to Cincinnati in the regular season finale and UConn in the Big East Tournament. With the loss to the UConn Huskies, Georgetown was forced to wait for Selection Sunday to hear their fate.
Excitement was all around when they heard their name called out as the No. 6 seed. They will face No. 11 seed Virginia Commonwealth University on March 18. VCU finished fourth in the Colonial Athletic Association and an overall record of 23-11. The Hoyas’ will bring their energy and desire to win into this game, which will hopefully give them a victory. Head Coach John Thompson III leads the Hoyas and relies on Austin Freeman and Chris Wright.
About The Team
Head Coach John Thompson III is in his seventh season at Georgetown. He has led the Hoyas to four appearances in the Big East Tournament Championship in seven years as head of the program, has been selected to the NCAA Tournament five of the last seven years, and back-to-back Big East Regular Season titles. He has been named BCA Male Coach of the Year and NABC Coach of the Year.
Senior Austin Freeman was named to the All-Big East First Team. This is his second-straight year that he has earned Big East honors. He averaged 17.8 points per game, 2.03 three-pointers per game, and 86.7% from the free throw line. One of three team captains, Freemen is ninth in all-time scoring for Georgetown with over 1,731 points.
Senior Chris Wright won his first ever Big East honor when he was named to the All-Big East Third Team. He averages 13.1 points per game and 5.36 assists per game. Wright is the 42nd person in Georgetown history to score over 1,000 points and currently has over 1,363 points. He also had a career high 439 assists. Wright underwent surgery at the end of February for a broken middle finger on his left hand (non-shooting). He broke it during the game against Cincinnati and is a hopeful returner for postseason play.
