Basketball began in India in the year 1930. In India, basketball is played by both men and women that’s why India has both national men’s basketball team and national women’s baksetball team.
These two national basketball teams of India are formed to represent the country in the tournaments in Asia and the international tournaments, however the national basketball teams do not participate much in these kinds of international events. The appearances of the India national men’s basketball team and national women’s basketball team will be discussed in great detail in a little while.
Summer Basketball Olympics
It is a fact that the India national basketball team do not participate in the major international basketball events. The participation of the national basketball team of India in the Summer Basketball Olympics is a proof to the stated fact in the previous sentence.
The national men’s basketball team participated only once in the Olympics, specifically in the 1980 Summer Basketball Olympics. The national men’s basketball team ended up in the 12th place. On the other hand, the India national women’s team did not participate even once in the Summer basketball women’s tournament.
FIBA World Championships
The national basketball team of India, both the men and women did not participate in any of the FIBA World Championships. However, it is said that the India national basketball teams will qualify for the next FIBA World Championship.
The FIBA Asia Championships
Even though the national team did not participate in the international tournaments, they constantly participate in the FIBA Asia Championships. However, the national men’s basketball team did not win any medal in the said tournament. The nearest rank to the finals that the men’s team achieved is the 4th place that they got in the 1975 FIBA Asia Championships that was held in Thailand.
The men’s team started to join the other countries in playing in the FIBA Asia Championships in the year 1965, which was held in Malaysia where the team ranked 7th overall, their second appearance was in 1967, 1969, 1971, 1973, 1975, 1977, 1979, 1981, 1983, 1985, 1987, 1989, 1991, 1995 and 1997 and the team ranked 6th, 5th, 6th, 6th, 4th, 7th, 5th, 5th, 6th, 10th, 6th, 6th, 13th, 13th and 11th respectively.
Just like the national men’s basketball team, the national women’s basketball team consistently partcipates in the FIBA Asia Championships and just like the men’s team, the women’s team did not have a chance to win gold, silver, or even bronze medals.
The India national women’s basketball team participated in the FIBA Asia Championships in the year 1970 and ended up in the 10th place, 1980 and ranked 7th place, 9th place in 1982, 7th place in the years 1984 and 1986, 8th place in the year 1988, in 1990 they ranked 7th place, 6th place in the year 1992, in 1997 they ended up in the 9th place , in 2001 ranked 8th place and lastly, in the year 2004, the India national women’s basketball team ended up in the 7th place.
