Sergei Belov
Sergei Alexandrovich Belov was born on January 23, 1944 in Nashchyokovo Village, which is now in Shegarsky District, Tomsk Oblast. He was a former basketball player before he entered his basketball coaching career. He played basketball with the Urlamash basketball team at the age 20, and then joined the CSKA Moscow.
He played for the CSKA Moscow for twelve years and with this twelve years, the team won eleven times as the USSR Champions and won twice in the Euroleague Championships in the year 1969 and 1971. He was also a player of the Soviet Union national basketball team for fourteen years, from the year 1967 up to 1980.
The Soviet Union national basketba team won one gold medal and three bronze medals in the Summer Basketball Olympics, two gold medals and one silver medal in the FIBA World Championships, and five gold medals, two silver medals, and one bronze medal in the European Championships.
During his basketball career, he was already a playing coach, thus he decided to pursue a coaching career. He became the head coach of the Russian national men’s basketball team. Under the coaching of Sergei Belov, the Russian national basketball team won two silver medals in the 1994 and 1998 FIBA World Championships and ranked 7th among 14 teams in the 1995 EuroBasket and 6th among 16 teams in the 1999 EuroBasket.
In 1991, FIBA named him the Best European Player Ever and on May 11, 1992, Sergei Belov became the first European to be inducted to the Basketball Hall of Fame. He is considered as one of the best Russian basketball player and coach for the success that he brought the Russian national basketball team whether as a player of as a coach.
Alexander Gomelsky
Alexander Gomelsky was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame in the year 1995 and in 2007, he was enshrined in the FIBA Hall of Fame. He is considered one of the best Russian basketball coaches, he is even called “The Alexander the Great of Russian Basketball”. Alexander Yakovlevich Gomelsky was born on the 18th day of January, 1928 in Kronstadt, USSR.
He began his coaching career in the year 1984 with the team LGS Spartak in Leningard, he then became the head coach of ASK Riga in 1953. He led the team to win five Soviet league titles and three European Cups. He became the head coach of the CSKA Moscow in 1969 until the year 1980, he also became the Soviet Union nationa basketball team. He led both teams to win several gold medals in the Summer Olympics and European Championships.
