The Georgetown Hoyas Women’s Basketball Team was ranked 17th in the NCAA Division 1 standings posted February 28th.
The Hoyas entered the Big East Championship quarterfinals with an overall record of 22-10 and a conference record of 9-7. They entered the tournament as the eighth seed and fell in the quarterfinals to the University of Connecticut.
The Hoyas Season
The Hoyas have had a rocky season with wins and losses but eventually toughed it out in the quarterfinals. Although they didn’t beat Connecticut, there is still a chance of getting into the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid.
Their season has seen both ups and downs, with most games being won or loss with a 10-point margin. On the rare occasion, the Hoyas were able to have a blow out and win by 20-points or more. In the game against Connecticut, the Hoyas played stellar defense but were unable to do the same on offense.
Both teams had a hard time converting on the offensive end but UConn’s early 17-5 run was enough to hold off the Hoyas the entire game. Georgetown couldn’t get any closer than 12 points the rest of the game. Terri Williams-Flournoy leads Georgetown as the head coach, however, she looks to sophomore Sugar Rodgers and senior Monica McNutt to get it done on the court.
About The Team
Terri Williams-Flournoy entered into her seventh season as the head coach of Georgetown. She has arguable led the Hoyas into the two most successful seasons in program history. Last season she led the Hoyas to a 13-3 conference record, 13-0 record at McDonough Arena, had a 16-game win streak, and finished tied for second in the Big East.
Sophomore Sugar Rodgers was selected for the All-Big East First Team award for the second year in a row. She led the team with 18.2 points per game and 75 steals and was second in rebounding with 4.7 rebounds per game. She is among the all-time leader in three-pointers and has surpassed the 1,000 point mark in her career.
Rodgers also earned two Big East Player of the Week selections and a Big East Weekly Honor Roll nod. Senior Monica McNutt received an honorable mention nod with her conference play. She averaged 10.6 points per game and 2 three-pointers per game. McNutt surpassed her 1,000th-career point and also leads the program in three-pointers. She has also played in 125 games with 97 consecutive starts and has started 105 of the last 106 games.
