The University of Kentucky Wildcats were ranked 16th in the NCAA Division 1 standings released on February 28.
The Wildcats entered the SEC Tournament with an overall record of 24-8 and a conference record of 11-5. Kentucky earned a No. 2 seed into the SEC Tournament and fell to Tennessee in the championship game.
The Wildcats Season
The Wildcats had a very successful season and opportunity to make it to the NCAA Tournament. Unfortunately, they fell to Tennessee in the championship game. It is interesting to note that of all three championship matchups in Kentucky history, they have all been against Tennessee.
Foul trouble also played a part in this loss. Kentucky was able to force Tennessee into 22 turnovers and has forced double-digit turnovers in 80 consecutive games. The team has tried 12 different starting lineups until finding the winning combination.
Head Coach Matthew Mitchell leads the Wildcats, but he looks to senior Victoria Dunlap, sophomore A’dia Mathies, and freshman Bernisha Pinkett for success on the court.
About The Team
Matthew Mitchell leads the Wildcats in his fourth year at the University of Kentucky. Although his time with Kentucky is still fairly recent, he has managed to lead the Wildcats to three consecutive postseason tournaments, including an Elite Eight appearance, defeated nine nationally-ranked opponents, had seven players receive All-SEC awards, six SEC Academic Honor Roll members, and one SEC Scholar Athlete of the Year. Last season he was named SEC Coach of the Year.
Dunlap received the school’s first Defensive Player of the Year award. She also led the SEC in steals per game with 3.3. In addition to this she was named to the All-Defensive Team and All-SEC First Team. Dunlap averaged 16.7 points per game, 3.3 steals per game, 8.8 rebounds per game, and 1.5 blocks per game.
She is the second player in school history to have over 1,000 points and rebounds in a career. Mathies was named to the All-Defensive Team and All-SEC Second Team. She averaged 13.3 points per game, 5 rebounds per game, 2.8 assists per game, and 2.2 steals per game.
Mathies scored double figures in 23 of 29 games. Pinkett was named to the All-SEC Freshman Team and has played in all 29 games of the season. She is averaging 7.2 points per game and has also been named SEC Freshman of the Week.
