The College of Wooster Men’s Basketball Team was ranked 1st in the NCAA Division III Great Lakes Region standings posted on February 28th.
The Fighting Scots finished their season with an overall record of 31-3. Wooster faced the University of St. Thomas and fell 78-54.
The Fighting Scots’ Season
The Fighting Scots were unable to duplicate their magical comeback they had in the game previous to the University of St. Thomas and fell 78-54. This game was the national title game and the Scots were unable to grab it. Going into the second half, the Scots were already down by 20, but used a quick run to reduce the point deficit by 10.
This would be as close as they would get for the rest of the game. The game previous to this was against Williams and the Scots went on a 17-0 run to win the game 73-71. Turnovers and shooting percentage contributed to the Scots loss in the title game. Wooster had 18 turnovers that led to 37 St. Thomas points.
St. Thomas was also 54.2% from the field and made 8 of 14 three-pointers for 57.1%. The Scots were 18 for 44 for 40.9% from the field. Wooster has much to be proud of this season as they won a school record 31 games, were both the North Coast Athletic Conference regular season and tournament champions, and had five NCAA Tournament wins to advance to the national title game for the first time. Head Coach Steve Moore leads the Scots but looks to Ian Franks, Nathan Balch, Justin Hallowell, and Bryan Wickliffe.
About The Team
Head Coach Steve Moore is in his 23rd season with Wooster and is one of the most successful basketball coaches in NCAA Division III history. In the seasons he has been with the Scots he has achieved an overall record of 538-126. He has directed the Scots to 18 NCAA Tournament berths and a league high, 13 NCAC championships, while compiling a winning percentage of .81. The Scots are currently the NCAA’s winningest team of the 2000’s with a 281-51 record.
Senior Ian Franks was voted NCAC Player of the Year for the second time and was also named to the All-NCAC First Team. He averages 18.3 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 3.3 assists per game. Senior Nathan Balch was also named to the All-NCAC First Team. He averages 12.9 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 1.2 assists per game to go along with his 86.1% from the free throw line, and 49.6% from behind the arc.
Junior Justin Hallowell and senior Bryan Wickliffe were also named to the All-NCAC Second Team. Hallowell averages 11.5 points and 5.7 rebounds per game. Wickliffe averages 11.4 points and 6.7 rebounds per game.
