The Ohio State Buckeyes Men’s Basketball Team ranked 1st in the NCAA Division 1 standings released March 7th.
The Ohio State Buckeyes will enter the Big Ten Tournament with an overall record of 29-2 and a Big Ten conference record of 16-2. After a combination of defeating Wisconsin, and Iowa beat Purdue, Ohio won the Big Ten Title.
The Buckeye’s Season
The Buckeyes have had a great season that continues on to the Big Ten Tournament. After defeating Wisconsin, they won the Big Ten Title. Ohio State has won 19 Big Ten Titles, entered the tournament as the No. 1 seed five times, and this is their 13th outright championship.
Their 29 regular season wins are also tied second for the school record of most wins in a season, the record being 35.
The 20-0 undefeated record at home is now the new school record as well. Ohio State leads the conference with an average of 77.4 points per game, second in scoring defense, allowing 59.6 points per game, best field goal percentage at .5. Thad Matta leads the Buckeyes as head coach, but he looks to Jared Sullinger, Aaron Craft, William Buford, and David Lighty for success.
About The Team
Thad Matta is in his sixth season as the head coach of the Buckeyes. After six seasons, his career record with the Buckeyes is 156-54 and he has more wins than any previous Ohio State coach. He has also won many honors including Big Ten Coach of the Year twice, Ohio Coach of the Year-Columbus Dispatch four times, Atlantic 10 Coach of the Year, and Midwestern Collegiate Conference Coach of the Year.
Freshman Jared Sullinger was named to the First Team All-Big Ten selection, as well as Freshman of the Year, All-Freshman Team, and NABC District 7 First Team. He averaged 17.3 points per game and 9.7 rebounds per game. He was Big Ten Freshman of the Week 12 times this season.
Freshman Aaron Craft was selected as Sixth Man of the Year, the All-Freshman Team, and All-Defensive Team honors. He came off the bench 30 of 31 games and led with 145 assists, 64 steals, 6.9 points per game, and 46% from the field. Junior William Buford was selected to the Second Team All-Big Ten selection and NABC District 7 Second Team as well.
He averaged 14.5 points per game and 48% of his field goal attempts. He also had 94 assists and 25 steals for the season. Senior David Lighty was also selected to the All-Big Ten Second Team and is a finalist for the Lowe’s Senior CLASS Award. He averaged 12.3 points per game, 104 assists, and 52 steals for the season. He is Ohio State’s all-time leader in wins with 124.
